Human basophils and eosinophils are the direct target leukocytes of the novel IL-1 family member IL-33.

In mice, interleukin-18 (IL-18) regulates Th1- or Th2-type immune responses depending on the cytokine environment and effector cells involved, and the ST2-ligand, IL-33, primarily promotes an allergic phenotype. Human basophils, major players in allergic inflammation, constitutively express IL-18 receptors, while ST2 surface expression is inducible by IL-3. Unexpectedly, freshly isolated basoph...

The role of IL-33 and mast cells in allergy and inflammation

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a member of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) cytokine family. It is preferentially and constitutively expressed in different structural cells such as epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. During necrosis of these cells (after tissue injury or cell damage), the IL-33 that is released may be recognized by different types of immune cells, such as eosinophi...

IL-25 and IL-33 induce Type 2 inflammation in basophils from subjects with allergic asthma

BACKGROUND The alarmin cytokines IL-25 and IL-33 are key promoters of type 2 inflammation. Basophils respond to alarmin cytokines, however the relationship of these cytokines with basophil activation and recruitment in human studies of allergic asthma has not been well characterized. This study investigated the effect of IL-25 and IL-33 on basophils in a model of allergic asthma. METHODS 10 m...

The role of eosinophils and basophils in allergic diseases considering genetic findings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Basophils and eosinophils represent less than 1 and 5% of white blood cells, respectively. Their role in asthma and allergic inflammation remains incompletely defined. The present review addresses recent advances regarding the role of these two cell populations in allergic inflammation and asthma regarding both biological and genetic point of view. RECENT FINDINGS Regarding ...

An IL-1 cytokine member, IL-33, induces human basophil activation via its ST2 receptor.

Basophils are thought to play pivotal roles in allergic inflammation through rapid release of chemical mediators in addition to sustained production of Th2 cytokines, including IL-4. A newly identified cytokine, IL-33, has been recognized as one of the key cytokines enhancing Th2-balanced immune regulation through its receptor, ST2. The present study was conducted to elucidate whether IL-33 act...
